What does a voice lesson with you look like?
I offer free vocal consultations, available to first time clients, where we’ll discuss what brings you to voice work. We might sing a little so I can hear your voice. This is also subject to change given what makes the most sense in the moment.
In the first few voice lessons we go over the basics of breath, the voice, technique, and anti-perfectionist singing. After that, I collaborate with my clients on what area of the voice or creativity we’ll focus on. Lessons usually entail breath work, warm-ups, song-work (original or not), and empathetic discussion around creative blocks or creative goals.
Since I work with people who have never sung in front of another person to professional musicians, these lessons are adaptable to your needs. If you’re curious if you’re actually tone deaf (you aren’t), we can explore your abilities! If you want to prep an audition song, we can run your piece from slate to “Thank you!” If you want a weekly space to check in with your voice and creativity, we can create that routine.
How much do lessons cost?
Free consultations are available to any first time adult client.
An hour long voice or piano lesson is $100. Adult clients work with me on a weekly or biweekly. In some cases, I am also available for one-off lessons.
Weekly piano lessons for kids is $160/month.
How many lessons do people usually take?
It’s different for everyone. Most of the people I work with benefit from a routine in order to build a practice. So I recommend that clients start with weekly or biweekly lessons for 3 months with the option to continue. If you’d like a one-off lesson to prep an audition, I’m available. Please email me at marthacorrineeies@gmail.com for a scheduling link.
What is my background?
I’m a classically trained singer that found freedom and success when I connected with play and pleasure. Once I opened up to all my voice could do, I found myself as a lead singer in a booked and busy 10-piece funk band. I’ve also been commissioned as a songwriter and as a solo vocalist in many capacities. Based on all of my varied experience I use a blend of technique, tenets of mindfulness, and advocacy to help people enjoy singing more now so that they will be in touch with their musicianship for the rest of their lives. I've taught for over 12 years inside individual lessons, group classes, daycares, and schools. I currently teach at the Guthrie and in my private studio.
Most voice teachers and music programs aim to reproduce the sounds, songs, and styles that have been historically successful on a commercial level by using traditional techniques and pedagogy. Like many other aspects of our existence today, I think a new way is necessary - and just plain exciting. There isn’t just one “perfect” voice! There are many ways voices can sound that appeal to HUGE audiences (just look to Tom Waits and Joanna Newsom!). I guide folks to cultivate a kind relationship with their creativity and voice, so they can explore all the facets of your voice to find freedom - beyond perfectionism and people-pleasing.
I also have tools to help the sensitive singer and artist. Partnering with a resilient nervous system transforms the way you create and the way you sing. As a creativity coach, I’m here to help you on your way to your goals through accountability, resources, and soul-searching exercises.
What makes you different from other voice teachers?
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to reschedule/cancel your session, you are asked to let the coach know more than 24 hours before the start time of your session. You commit to applying your best effort to meet at the time scheduled as last minute changes to the coach's schedule often lead to lost income. The coach will do their best to reschedule the session for that same calendar week. If you let the coach know within 24 hours of the start time of your session, the coach will also do her best to offer a rescheduled time within that same calendar week. If it is not possible to reschedule, you will be charged the full session fee. In most instances, biweekly lessons cannot be rescheduled for the following calendar week but the coach will offer options when possible. This policy may be waived in exceptional circumstances (at the coach’s discretion).
